A licensed practical nurse must complete an approved education program that usually takes 1 year to obtain a diploma or certificate. Programs are available at community colleges and trade schools. Each program will provide supervised clinical experience.

After receiving a diploma or certificate, LPN will take the National Council License Exam (NCLEX-PN) to get a license to work. The test is five hours long. According to the National Council of the State Board of Nursing, the national graduation rate in 2015 for NCLEX-PN was 81.89% for the first test takers who were educated in the United States.

When searching for an LPN program, look for schools where students have a high level of graduation for the license exam. This information can be obtained when registering for the LPN program. Some programs might list their exam passing rates on the school website. If not, you can ask questions when talking to the admissions advisor before committing to start the LPN program. Also, don't forget to make sure the program is accredited and officially recognized by the nursing board. It must be accredited for you to take the exam.
