CRNA Programs from UT Health. Get your CRNA degree from University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. The Nurse Anesthesia Program will prepare graduates to be able to manage the anesthesia needs of patients of all ages. Students can develop their expertise in the fields of pre-anesthesia assessment and evaluation, anesthesia administration and monitoring, anesthesia planning, and post-anesthesia care.

This program specifically prepares graduates to be able to manage all types of anesthesia, including regional and neuraxial anesthesia, general anesthesia, along with sedation techniques.

The Nurse Anesthesia Program BSN-DNP is designed to equip future anesthesia nurses with the knowledge and skills to translate and implement the best evidence into practice.

Additional doctoral education and experience, in areas such as system leadership, provides students with basic elements of nurse anesthesia to improve the quality of nurse anesthesia practices, improve the safety of patient care, and provide cost-effective care for all patient populations.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the National Certification Examination (NCE) for Anesthesia Nurses offered by the National Council on Certification and Recertification of Anesthesia Nurses (NBCRNA).

The Cizik School of Nursing is the first and only state university in the State of Texas that offers a BSN-DNP in Nurse Anesthesia. The curriculum, approved by the Accreditation Board of Nurses' Anesthesia Education Program, consists of 112 credits and nine semesters (36 months) in length.

Student graduation rates on the National Certification Examination (NCE) - administered by the National Council for Certification and Recertification of Anesthesia Nurses (NBCRNA) - for anesthetist nurses who have graduated from the anesthesia nurse program at UTHealth College of Nurses, while dropout rates remain very low.
  • 100 percent of BSN-DNP nurse anesthesia graduates in May 2019 graduate from NCE.
  • Seven graduating classes have recently reached 100 percent graduation rates at NCE's first attempt (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018)
  • The NCE (initial examination) first pass test taker rate for the latest five-year composite (2015-2019) is 98.9 percent.
  • Over the past five years, 100 percent of new UTHealth nurse anesthesia graduates (MSN and BSN-DNP) have been employed as nurse anesthetists within six months.

Essential Skills for Nursing
Nurses in particular must be able to demonstrate their cognitive skills in critical and logical or analytical thinking. Nurses must also be able to have psychomotor skills, including fine motor dexterity, coordination, physical strength, and good body mechanics. Observation skills are also very necessary, such as the ability to hear in the normal decibel range. Also the ability to read English in plain to extra fine print, and the ability to feel or auscultate.
