To get a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, students must successfully complete both elements of the program.

History of Houston Baptist University
Houston Baptist University was created by the action of the Baptist General Convention of Texas on November 15, 1960 which culminated in years of work and study. The founding goal of the College is to establish Christian College in the highest order in the city of Houston which emphasizes quality of life and quality of learning.
In 1952, the Union Baptist Association endorsed a committee to study the possibility of finding a Baptist College in Houston. With the help and encouragement of the Texas Baptist General Convention Educational Commission, the committee conducted a survey in 1955.
Acting on information obtained with the support of the Education Commission, the Association approved the concept of establishing a new Higher Education Institution.
In 1956, the Baptist Executive Board of the General Convention of Texas approved a recommendation that the Houston Baptist be given an assurance that the Convention would support such a College when the College Committee of the Union Baptist Association had succeeded in obtaining both.

Of this, one and a half million dollars will be the perpetual fund of the nucleus; one and a half million dollars will go to physical factories.
The United Baptist Association accepts these conditions and agrees to the conditions set by the state Baptist convention.
In 1957, a Houston land developer, Frank Sharp, offered to sell the 390-acre Union Baptist Association in southwest Houston for the construction of a College.
The Board of Governors of Rice University agreed to lend most of the money needed with land as collateral.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree
The Faculty of Nursing develops innovative curricula for undergraduate
nursing programs designed to prepare nurses who function well in acute care settings and in special and community settings.
The results of the inclusion of the Texas Board of Nursing (2010) Differentiation in Entry Competency Level, the number of clinical hours needed, faculty supervision of clinical experience, and limited observation experience.
The nursing program is organized in a curriculum framework that addresses seven dimensions of health to increase fulfillment in life. The logical sequence of the curriculum includes:
- Study in the Christian Liberal Arts Core Curriculum.
- Prerequisites for scientific foundations and scientific behavior for nursing studies: Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, Psychology, Human Growth and Development, and Statistics.
- Development of basic knowledge, skills and values in nursing (Perspectives on Health Care Delivery Systems, Health Assessment, Arts & Nursing Science). The initial focus is broad and inclusive of the community, groups, families and individuals.
- The focus becomes narrow with growth in understanding key concepts in nursing by applying this understanding to Individuals and Families in the course on Care for Individuals with acute, chronic, and critical illness, and Special Care which includes Care of Families with Mental Health Problems, Family Giving Birth, and Family with children.
- Advanced BSN level curriculum developed in a) public health, b) pathophysiology, and c) research.
- Along with nursing studies, studies continue to develop in the core studies of Christianity.
- The liberal arts curriculum requires a demonstration of competence in reading English, writing English, mathematics, and functional use of computer technology. BSN students broaden their liberal arts core by studying in the fields of humanities and fine arts.
- The graduation course is expanded to care for groups of people and families. The core Capstone course includes studies in Nursing Management and Health Care Administration.

The aim of the Allied Schools of Care and Health is to educate nurses to create health service delivery systems to meet the needs of individuals, families and groups in society.
Health care focuses on health promotion and disease prevention, as well as community-based care.
The curriculum reflects and includes opportunities for service-based learning. All programs needed to get a BSN degree are offered by HBU.

The RN license is issued by the Texas Nursing Council, not the University. The Nursing Board can refuse to accept someone to R.N. license check if the person has been convicted of any crime or minor violation involving moral atrocity, or to anyone who lacks good fitness or character to practice nursing on the grounds of physical or mental illness, alcohol or drug use, or is unprofessional or dishonorable behavior that may deceive, deceive, or hurt the patient or the community.
Admission Procedures and Policies for a Baccalaureate Degree in NursingTo be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program, applicants must have:
- Has been accepted at HBU through the general undergraduate admission process.
- Meet a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.0 Science
- Transcripts that reflect no more than two "D" or "F" classes in the required science course, or more than one "D" or "F" class in the nursing course (if more, do not qualify for admission)
- Attend Nursing Information Sessions.
- Complete the entrance exam for HESI Assessment (HESI A2) based on two (2) attempts only to achieve a score of 80% in each sub-section (Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Mathematics), and sub-Anatomy & Physiology and critical thinking sections (no minimum score required). For entry into the January 2020 or August 2020 cohort, students can take the A2 HESI exam as described above or the ATI TEAS acceptance test. Please contact the School of Nursing for further details regarding the TEAS exam.
- Complete all nursing prerequisite courses (see above) with a grade of "C" or better.
- Has been selected to enter the program after applying to the nursing program.
- Clear criminal background checks and no evidence of drug or alcohol use / abuse.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
The MSN program prepares professional nurses for postgraduate roles as Family Nurse Practitioners or Primary Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
Graduates have increased independence and autonomy in practice and are eligible to apply for national certification.

The Master of Science degree in Nursing gives graduates the opportunity to complete the following program results:

MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner Track
The Family Nurse Practitioner Track (FNP) will prepare graduates to function as the primary health care provider for clients of all ages.
FNP carries out health promotion, conducts health assessments, and manages good, acute and chronic ill clients of all ages in ambulatory and sub-specialty settings.
Graduates will meet the criteria to take the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner or the American Nurses Credentialing Center exam.
MSN, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Primary Care
The Pediatric Practitioner-Primary Care (PNP-PC) track will prepare graduates to function as the primary health care provider for children and adolescents.
PNP-PC promotes children's health and development, conducts development and health assessments, and manages sick, chronic and chronic children and adolescents in ambulance and sub-specialty settings.
Graduates are eligible to take the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care certification through the American Nurse Credential Center (ANCC) or the Pediatric Nurses Certification Board (PCNB).
