Students at the School of Nursing participate in a variety of learning and clinical experiences, ranging from inpatient hospital settings to outpatient community settings. Caring for diverse populations across all ages, students develop general nursing knowledge that helps them find their area of interest as they plan their future nursing careers.
In the Master of Science in Nursing program, students can visit campus to conduct intensive clinical practicums twice to work with instructors and classmates. Clinical practicums are highly supported to improve advanced health assessment skills and direct procedures, such as suturing and X-ray interpretation. During clinical rotations, students complete time with the teacher in their chosen field.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
The nursing program provides students with essential knowledge and skills about high-quality and safe care techniques for patients of all ages and backgrounds. From the start of the program and throughout the curriculum, excellence was a mainstay in the Nursing School.
After being treated at the School of Nursing, students will be required to complete 53 hours of nursing education, didactic and clinical courses, to fulfill degree requirements.
Admission Requirements - pre-nursing program
The highly selective SFA nursing program is divided into two components: pre-nursing and nursing. All students who enter are considered as pre-nursing students.
As a pre-nursing student, you will be required to complete all the core courses and prerequisites needed to register for the nursing program and you will need a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a minimum GPA of 2.75 in all science classes.
All pre-nursing students who are interested in applying to the nursing program must take the Essential Academic Skills Acceptance Assessment Test.
After you have completed at least three science programs and are in the last semester of prerequisites, you can register for the nursing program.

Master of Science in Nursing by online
The online Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioners from DeWitt School of Nursing will take your nursing career to the next level.
Nurses across the state now have access to the online family nurse practitioner program offered by SFA. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Nursing Council recently approved the Master of Science in Nursing program for nominating status.
As a student in the M.S.N.-F.N.P program, you will complete a rigorous combination of postgraduate level courses and work with nurse practitioners and primary care physicians in clinical settings in Nacogdoches and surrounding communities.
The Master of Science in Nursing with a focus as a Family Nurse Practitioner is designed to prepare for the B.S.N. nurses are prepared to provide care in a variety of primary care places.
This program emphasizes care for the community, families and individuals who live and work in areas that are medically underserved, especially in East Texas.
The curriculum is delivered online on a part-time basis and consists of 46 hours of coursework and 720 hours of minimum practical experience.
Candidates will visit the SFA campus three times, once for orientation sessions, and twice for courses in different semesters.

Stephen F. Austin State Univ. (the SFA) is a public university in Nacogdoches, Texas. It was established as a teacher college in 1923 as a result of a law made by State Senator Wilfred Roy Cousins, Sr.,. The university then changed its name to one of Texas's founding fathers, Stephen F. Austin. The campus is in the guesthouse section of Thomas Jefferson Rusk. Stephen F. Austin is one of four independent state universities in Texas.
